Sudoku strategy on Duel.com: how to win a Sudoku race on Duel PvP
Looking for a Sudoku strategy for head-to-head races? In the Duel.com Arena (Duel PvP) both players get the same puzzle and race to finish it. Here are the rules as Duel shows them, a solving order that avoids costly mistakes, and how to use your opponent's progress.
Sudoku strategy in short
- Start with the row, column or box that has the most digits already filled.
- Look for cells where only one digit fits, then for digits that fit in only one cell of a unit.
- Never guess: a wrong digit can break the grid and does not count at the timer.
- If time runs short, fill the cells you are certain of first: the player with more correct cells wins a timeout.
- Watch your own grid more than your opponent's progress.
Sudoku rules on Duel PvP
These rules come from the Sudoku rules panel, read on October 14, 2026. Both players get the same puzzle and race to solve it. Fill every empty cell so each row, column and 3x3 box contains the digits 1 to 9 exactly once.
- First to finish. The first player to complete their grid correctly wins.
- Hidden digits. You only see your opponent's progress, never their digits.
- When the timer runs out. The player with more correct cells wins; equal counts are a tie and the stakes are refunded.
The lobby has a Play Demo button for a game with no opponent.
Sudoku solving order: a safe strategy
Speed matters, but a wrong digit costs more than a slow one: your grid is only complete when it is correct, and a timeout counts correct cells. These are general Sudoku techniques:
- Start with the fullest units. A row, column or box with many digits already filled has the fewest possibilities. Fill those first.
- Look for single candidates. A cell where only one digit can go is a free move. Check each empty cell against its row, column and box.
- Look for hidden singles. A digit that can only go in one cell of a row, column or box must go there, even if that cell has other candidates.
- Scan by digit. Pick a digit and find where it can go in each box. When a digit has one place left, place it.
- Do not guess. If you are not sure, find another cell. A wrong digit can break the rest of the grid.
Sudoku timeout rules: what counts at the buzzer
If nobody finishes in time, the player with more correct cells wins. That changes the last minute:
- Fill the sure cells first. Every correct cell is a point in a timeout, so place the digits you are certain about before you try the hard ones.
- Wrong digits do not count. A cell you fill incorrectly is not a correct cell. Skip it rather than gamble.
- Equal counts refund the stakes, so a tie is a safe outcome when you are behind.
Using your Sudoku opponent's progress
You see how far your opponent has got, but never their digits. That is useful information:
Sudoku practice and fair play
Use the Play Demo button to practice with no opponent. Do not use a Sudoku solver, a scanner app or any outside help while you play: it is cheating in a race against a real person and can get an account closed. Check Duel's terms for the exact rules.
Common Sudoku mistakes
- Guessing a digit to save a few seconds.
- Working on the hardest part of the grid first.
- Not checking the whole row, column and box before you place a digit.
- Ignoring the timer when nobody is close to finishing.
- Watching your opponent's progress instead of your own grid.
